Army XI. Outplayed

The Army XI., with which Leeds United filled a blank in their League, fixtures at Elland Road, did not prove to be quite, so clever as its military sponsors, had hoped. Despite the goodnatured and often distinctly humorous words of encouragement from the other ranks who came, in support, and the more conventional advice of the officers, the Army side, was beaten by five goals to nothing. Really, United ought to have scored a lot more, but Hargreaves at outside left for Leeds achieved wonders in missing openings, while Sapper Devaney, who in peace-time plays for Tranmere Rovers, was the hero of the day in the Army's last line of defence. United had an amateur right wing pair, Howitt putting across many clever centres while his partner Aitken, who is a munition worker from Portobello, made an encouraging first appearance.
